SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:The SICSA PhD Conference will take place on 11th & 12th September 2023 at the Stirling Court Hotel\, University of Stirling \n\n\nThis year\, the focus of the SICSA Conference will be on building research programmes to address interdisciplinary challenges. Increasingly\, research focus and funding is led by societal challenges that are of international concern. \n\n\n\n\nAlthough computing science research will be fundamental to addressing these challenges\, they will also need to collaborate across disciplines and a wide range of stakeholders.  The aim of this conference is to expose research students to the opportunities of interdisciplinary research as well as the skills and tools they will need to work effectively in this context. \nThe conference will include keynotes from high-profile speakers on the challenge-led research landscape\, as well as workshops on research programme road mapping and interdisciplinary collaboration. Students will have opportunities to practice these skills in small teams drawn from the diverse fields of our discipline\, in order to develop their own collective research visions resulting in a Pitching Session on day two of the conference with prizes to be won! \nIf you are a PhD student studying Informatics and Computing Science or an Early Career Researcher within a SICSA institution then you are eligible to register for the event. \nFor more information on the Conference and details of registration please visit the Conference Website

SUMMARY:SICSA Education Event: "Evaluating the Sense of Belonging of Undergraduate Computing Students in the UK and Ireland - an invitation to collaborate".
DESCRIPTION:SICSA Education is delighted to be supporting the launch of the University of Edinburgh Computer Science Education (CSE) group. There will also be a keynote talk on “Evaluating the Sense of Belonging of Undergraduate Computing Students in the UK and Ireland – an invitation to collaborate”.  \nBoth the keynote and the event as a whole is open to anyone in Scotland and beyond with an interest in the intersection of education and computer science. \nFor more information and registration details\, please see https://www.tickettailor.com/events/computerscienceeducation/1012242.  If you choose to attend remotely a link to be sent upon registration \nKeynote Session Abstract:\nDuring this presentation\, we will introduce our plans for our forthcoming collaborative project – which we are running as a RIPPA (Research in Practice Project Activity)\, a year-long multi-institute research project\, part of the UKICER (UK and Ireland Computing Education Research) programme. As well as sharing our plans with the community\, we are looking to engage those interested in collaborating as part of this project from institutions across the country. \nSense of Belonging\, or belongingness\, is an individual’s personal conviction regarding their acceptance as a valued member within an academic community. The significance of student belongingness lies in its correlation with various outcomes including motivation\, persistence\, mental health and well-being. However\, the experience of belongingness is subject to variations influenced by factors such as race/ethnicity and gender. Previous research has demonstrated notable statistical differences in the belongingness experienced by computing students who identify as women or as part of other minoritized groups. \nDuring the COVID-19 pandemic\, we observed a decline in belongingness among male and female students who do not identify as minoritised\, while an increase was observed among women who identify as minoritised. Although students have returned to campus\, current surveys reveal that the belongingness levels among men and women who do not identify as minoritised have not fully recovered to pre-pandemic levels. Additionally\, a statistically significant decrease in belongingness is observed among men who identify as minoritised. This emphasizes the necessity for continued efforts to restore student belongingness to its pre-pandemic state and shed light on the positive impact that moving to a virtual environment appeared to have on sense of belonging of minoritised women. \nWe have been studying the sense of belonging of undergraduate students in the School of Computer Science at University College Dublin since 2017\, and at the University of Edinburgh since 2021. We have recently extended this work across Ireland and Northern Ireland\, and would now like to expand further across Scotland and into Wales and England. We invite interested parties to participate in our RIPPA (Research in Practice Project Activity)\, a year long project starting in Autumn 2023.

DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that this year’s SICSA Pre-CHI day will be hosted by the University of Edinburgh on the 3rd May. This will be an all-day event\, comprising of talks\, posters\, demos and social activities where work being presented at the 2024 ACM CHI conference by Scotland-based researchers will be shared\, discussed and explored. \nThe event is an opportunity to celebrate Scottish success at this year’s CHI conference\, help build links across the Scottish HCI community\, and welcome HCI researchers who are new to Scotland. It also gives an opportunity for interested researchers who are unable to go to CHI itself this year to hear about work being presented at the conference\, and to discuss in depth with researchers their latest work. We expect a mixed audience\, including researchers of the Scottish HCI community as well as interested students and industry collaborators. \nAre you a researcher based in Scotland with work accepted to CHI 2024 that you’d like to share with us as part of our event? \nIf yes\, please do register by the 12th April so we can finalise the programme for the day. The registration form allows you to tell us some basic details about the work you’d like to share. \nGeneral registration for attendees will be open until the 30th April for in-person\, and until the day before the event for online remote attendance. \n\n\n\n\nEvent programme to be announced closer to date of event. \nThe full details of the programme will be announced close to the date as it depends on the number of authors able to contribute talks to the programme. \nAttendance is free\, however you should register on this Eventbrite in order that catering numbers can be confirmed. \nIn-person attendance: Inspace\, 1 Crichton St\, Newington\, Edinburgh EH8 9AB\nOnline In-person attendance: Zoom \nPlease note limited seats are available at Inspace for in-person audiences\, so please book tickets in advance. For those joining online please select the appropriate ticket below\, and you will be emailed the link to the Zoom room the day prior to the event. \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact the Design Informatics administrative team: designinformatics@ed.ac.uk

SUMMARY:PHAWM Launch and Networking Event
DESCRIPTION:SICSA is looking forward to attending the PHAWM Launch and Networking Event next Friday – 25 October 2024. \nJoin us for the launch of the Participatory Harm Auditing Workbenches and Methodologies (PHAWM ) project. Led by a consortium of 7 academic institutions in collaboration with 24 partner organisations\, PHAWM is set to transform AI auditing. We’re addressing the complex challenge of determining the benefits and harms of generative and predictive AI systems by involving a diverse group of stakeholders without AI expertise\, including end-users\, regulators\, decision subjects\, and domain experts. \nOur project spans four key areas: Health\, Media Content\, Cultural Heritage\, and Collaborative Content Generation. Join us for drink and canapés and learn more about our vision for workbenches for AI assessment\, comprehensive methodologies for participatory audits\, and a certification framework for AI solutions. \nThere will be an opportunity to network with leading figures from industry\, cultural heritage\, academia\, and AI ethics as we share our plans\, and opportunities to engage with our project and keep up to date with future developments. It promises to be a landmark occasion in AI ethics and governance\, we do hope you’ll join us at the University of Strathclyde Technology and Innovation Centre. \nReserve your place.
