DESCRIPTION:Low Carbon Computing Seminar \nSylvia Wenmackers\, BOF Research Professor at the  Centre for Logic and Philosophy of Science (CLPS) of KU Leuven\, will deliver their talk “A Philosophical Exploration of Frugal Computing” \nIn response to the unsustainable rise in materials and energy required for current and projected computations\, Vanderbauhede (2021) argued that we urgently need to adopt a more frugal approach to computing. To develop this proposal\, this talk explores related ideas from economics and philosophy. For instance\, Schumacher’s (1973) Small Is Beautiful gave rise to the notion of ‘appropriate technology’\, which suggests supplementing frugal computing with a people-centered focus. In addition\, environmental virtue ethics can be used to refine a question that frugal computing already poses: in light of human flourishing\, which computations are worth doing in the first place? Finally\, we may wonder whether the study of what needs to be done should ever take precedence over the investigation of the facts themselves. DESCRIPTION:Please register to attend in person or online. \nVenue: Room 423\, Sir Alwyn Williams Building\, Lilybank Gardens\, School of Computing Science\, University of Glasgow \nJoin us for the last SICSA Education Seminar of 2025 on 15 December at 2pm where University of Glasgow doctoral candidate Eyman Alyahyan will present her work:  A Pedagogical Prompt Engineering Protocol Applied to LLM Feedback in Introductory Programming \nAbstract:\nMany researchers and educators are exploring how Large Language Models (LLMs) could be used to support feedback practices in computing education. Yet the prompts that guide these systems are often ad-hoc and not grounded in pedagogy. What if we could design prompts that enable LLMs to produce feedback that supports student learning? \nIn this seminar\, Eyman Alyahyan introduces the Pedagogical Prompt Engineering Protocol (PPEP)—a systematic\, theory-informed methodology for developing effective educational prompts. PPEP served as the methodological foundation for this work. Applying the protocol led to the PPE-LLM framework\, a set of 10 components that translate the protocol into a clear design structure for building prompts. These components give teachers a ready-to-use scaffold for creating a well-structured prompt. That prompt can then be used to generate formative feedback using LLMs that supports student learning in introductory programming. \nThe talk shows how moving from principles to practice can make LLM-generated feedback more consistent and pedagogically meaningful. It also offers a transparent\, repeatable approach for researchers and developers to create future prompt frameworks and LLM-based feedback tools grounded in pedagogy rather than intuition.

DESCRIPTION:Hybrid event hosted at University of Aberdeen \nRegister here: Co-Production Toolkit Launch Event – Expression of Interest \nJoin Dr Michelle Sader (University of Aberdeen) for the launch of The Researcher’s Toolkit\, a valuable resource for researchers across disciplines. \nCo-production is a collaborative approach to research\, where people with both lived and learnt experience work together to conceptualise\, conduct and disseminate research. Co-production not only benefits a variety of different communities\, but is also increasingly sought after by academic funders and journals. As part of a previous workshop co-sponsored by the University\, the Scottish Imaging Network: A Platform For Scientific Excellence (SINAPSE)\, the Eating Disorders and Autism Collaborative and Alzheimer’s Research UK\, workshop attendees and organisers co-designed a 35-page resource toolkit focusing on co-production. SUMMARY:LOCOS Seminar - Lieven Eeckhout: Sustainable Processor Design
DESCRIPTION:Low Carbon Computing Seminar \nLieven Eeckhout is a Professor at Ghent University\, Belgium\, and will deliver a LOCOS Seminar on Sustainable Processor Design. \nSustainability and climate change is a major challenge for our generation. In this talk I will argue that sustainable development requires a holistic approach and involves multi-perspective thinking. Applied to computing\, sustainable development means that we need to consider the entire environmental impact of computing\, including raw material extraction\, component manufacturing\, product assembly\, transportation\, use\, repair/maintenance\, and end-of-life processing (disassembly and recycling/ reuse). Analyzing current trends reveals that the embodied footprint is\, or will soon be\, more significant compared to the operational footprint. I will present a simple\, yet insightful\, first-order model to assess and reason about the sustainability of processors in light of the inherent data uncertainty. It will also give an overview of even smaller ‘baby’ language models. Finally\, the talk will conclude by presenting some recent studies in which we developed baby language models using very small amounts of data.

DESCRIPTION:Low Carbon Computing Seminar \nPedro Petersen Moura Trancoso of Chalmers University of Technology will deliver a LOCOS seminar: Designing a Cross-Layer Sustainable Computing Course in an HPC Curriculum. \nThe rapid growth of computational demand\, combined with the carbon cost of device production and the end of Moore’s Law scaling\, makes low-carbon computing a first-order engineering challenge. Achieving “frugal computing” — doing more with less energy — requires reasoning across the full system stack. \nThis talk presents the design and evolution of a master-level Sustainable Computing course within the High-Performance Computer Systems programme at Chalmers University of Technology. The course integrates circuit-level power mechanisms\, architectural techniques\, operating system and runtime strategies\, and data centre efficiency\, supported by hands-on energy measurement and simulation. \nProfessor Trancoso will discuss both the pedagogical rationale and the challenges encountered: polarized student perceptions of depth\, aligning assessment with cross-layer learning\, and balancing breadth with technical rigor. As the Internet continues to evolve to meet the needs of emerging applications\, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) remains one of the most influential venues for shaping their technical foundations. \nThis workshop is a hands‑on\, introductory event designed to help researchers\, students\, and engineers understand how the IETF works\, and how their own research can translate into meaningful standards contributions. \nParticipants will learn: \n – how ideas progress through the IETF process\, from early Internet‑Drafts to published RFCs \n – how working groups operate and how “rough consensus” is formed \n – how to navigate essential tools like the IETF Datatracker\, mailing lists\, and GitHub \n – how research or engineering results can influence standards work \nThe workshop will feature talks from academics that are active within the IETF. Attendees will also map their own interests to relevant IETF working groups and leave with clear\, actionable next steps for getting involved. \n

Sponsored by the ACM special interest groups on computer-human interaction (SIGCHI) and artificial intelligence (SIGAI) as well as the IEEE robotics and automation society (RAS)\, HRI brings together researchers spanning robotics\, human-computer interaction\, human factors\, artificial intelligence\, engineering\, and social and behavioral sciences. \nThe theme of the 21st edition of HRI is HRI Empowering Society. \nOur field has the potential to bring about positive change in many areas of our societies such as healthcare\, transport\, remote working\, agriculture and industry. DESCRIPTION:Register to attend \nJoin us on Wednesday\, 25 March for an AI & Data Science Seminar. \nDr Neil Urquhart of Edinburgh Napier University presents \nCan Evolution Develop Public Transport Networks? \nPublic transport networks by their very nature evolve over time to meet the needs of travellers\, fit the constraints of operators and meet the aspirations of politicians. This talk examines the use of novelty search to explore changes to the bus network in the centre of Edinburgh. The existing solution has been evolving since 1871 matching the changing nature of the city and transportation technologies. We harness geospatial data to evaluate the existing solution and then use novelty search to find modified solutions and examine their relationship to the existing solution. We are particularly interested in balancing the novelty of proposed changes with the distance from the current trusted solution. \nThis talk will demonstrate the potential for novelty search to assist with the design and modification of public transport routes and set and agenda for future research which will aim to cover larger areas and encompass multiple transport modes. \nDr Neil Urquhart is Associate Professor of Computer Science at Edinburgh Napier University\, his research interests include real-world applications of Artificial Intelligence particularly in the transport sector. \n

However\, more challenging domains such as education\, domestic environments\, and healthcare are significantly more unpredictable and difficult to evaluate in terms of effectiveness\, social interaction\, and risk.\nLast year\, Dr Strathearn contributed to the development of two rapid technology assessments published by the UK Government Office for Science on humanoid and AI-driven robots. These reports examined the feasibility and challenges of deploying such systems in their current state to help inform policymakers across government. DESCRIPTION:Register to attend \nJoin us on Thursday\, 30 April for an AI & Data Science Seminar. \nDr Hazrat Ali of University of Stirling presents  \nGenerative AI for Medical Computer Vision \nAbstract \nBefore synthetic data became popular\, data scarcity was considered a major bottleneck in training AI (deep learning) models for medical imaging. Generative AI enabled the AI research community to feed the data-hungry deep learning models by generating synthetic image data. This talk will explore the potential of Generative AI\, particularly Generative Adversarial Networks\, in medical imaging applications. The talk will cover some of the advances in; (1) atherosclerotic disease transformation\, a project that I undertook at the Umea Biomedical Engineering R&D of Umea University Hospital\, (2) Super-resolution of medical images\, and (3) Recent shift toward Neural Diffusion Models. \nDr Hazrat Ali is Lecturer in AI and Data Science at University of Stirling where his research portfolio spans Generative AI\, Medical AI\, healthcare\, and computer vision\, with a specific focus on generative adversarial networks for medical imaging\, deep learning for ultrasound medical imaging\, and AI for healthcare. Dr Ali developed a new method for disease transformation in ultrasound images\, as part of the VIPVIZA project at Umea University\, Sweden. In addition\, he has developed open-source datasets\, including a dataset of natural scene images with Urdu text\, the UHaT dataset (the first dataset on Urdu handwritten characters)\, and a speech corpus for Urdu. These datasets\, available on the Kaggle platform\, have proven invaluable for AI-oriented tasks and have contributed to advancing the field. \nHe has worked on multiple research positions\, including working as a senior researcher at Umea University Biomedical Engineering R&D Center in Sweden\, and Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar.

DESCRIPTION:Teaching Product Judgement: Rethinking the Student Experience in Software Product and Project Management with Dr Abd Alsattar Ardati\nAbstract:\nSoftware engineering students are often well prepared to think about implementation and delivery\, but less often asked to reason about value\, prioritisation\, uncertainty\, and strategic trade-offs. In this talk\, I will present the pedagogical design of CS5034\, a Master’s-level module in Software Product and Project Management at the University of St Andrews\, and reflect on how it was used to reshape the student experience around product judgement rather than delivery alone. The module combines a standards-based foundation in software product management through ISPMA with discovery-led teaching\, a shared fictional startup case\, studio-style tutorials\, and coursework built around revision and feedback. In this session\, we first cover basics of annotation protocols. We then build a formalism (based on coresets and multi-armed bandits) for choosing which models to evaluate and on which items\, in order to make evaluation more efficient. \nVilém Zouhar is last-year PhD at ETH Zurich and Google PhD Fellow. He works on both the practical and theoretical aspects of evaluation (human annotations\, automated metrics\, methods)\, especially in the context of multilingual NLP.

SUMMARY:Scottish Argumentation Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:Scotland has a particularly high concentration of research groups working in the AI subfield of computational argumentation. Scottish Argumentation Day has previously been attended by researchers based both in Scotland and further afield\, and has enabled the Scottish argumentation community to present their work in an informal setting\, share feedback\, and strengthen professional links. SAD began with Aberdeen 2011\, and most recently took place in Edinburgh 2024. \nIn continuing this series\, our aim is threefold: (i) enable Scottish argumentation researchers\, and especially PhD students\, to mutually present their work; (ii) affirm Scottish argumentation research as a recognisable presence; (iii) provide a concrete opportunity for Scottish researchers to network. \nAt SAD 2026 we aim to improve visibility for Scotland-based researchers\, especially PhD students and early-career researchers\, to encourage knowledge- and skill-exchange at all levels\, and to foster cross-institution relations and collaborations. \nParticipation is free but registration is required. \n————————————————– \nWe invite abstracts of up to 250 words to be presented as a short talk or poster. Whilst usually requiring high-performance or high-throughput computing resources\, this AI-driven search for optimality generally improves attainable KPIs and drives an overall reduction of design and prototyping times.  \nOver the years\, we have successfully applied this generic simulation-optimisation approach to tackle complex real-life problems aligned with the transition to net zero at various levels: individual components (e.g.\, robust designing in mechatronics)\, energy assets (e.g.\, optimising wind farm cable layouts)\, and complex systems (e.g.\, maximising the impact of introducing low emission vehicles in multi-modal transport systems\, optimising a just transition of the workforce across legacy and new energy projects). \nDr Ciprian Zavoianu is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Computing Engineering and Technology at RGU and leads the Net Zero Operations research programme in the National Subsea Centre where his research interests for the past 10+ years have included theoretical and practical concepts of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

DESCRIPTION:Registration for the 10th Symposium and Summer School on Computational Interaction will open 1 February and close 14 March 2026. \nView programme\, event details and registration process at S³CIX 2026. \nThis year S³CIX is expanding from a Summer School format to also include a 4 day long academic Symposium. We anticipate about 30 students and 40 academics and invited speakers to attend. There will also be two workshops. \nComputational interaction often involves elements from machine learning\, signal processing\, information theory\, optimisation\, inference\, control theory and formal modelling. Computational interaction would typically involve at least one of: \n\nan explicit mathematical model of user-system behaviour;\na way of updating that model with observed data from users;\nan algorithmic element that\, using this model\, can directly synthesise or adapt the design;\na way of automating and instrumenting the modelling and design process;\nthe ability to simulate or synthesise elements of the expected user-system behaviour.”
