SUMMARY:LOCOS Seminar - Decomputing
DESCRIPTION:The next LOCOS Seminar will take place next week with guest speaker Dan Mcquillan\, Senior Lecturer in Critical AI at Goldsmith’s\, University of London. \nTitle: Decomputing \nAbstract: \n“This talk will attempt to extend the idea of low carbon computing by calling for collective decision-making around the development and deployment of computational technologies. While progress can be made on both energy demands and embodied carbon\, these are currently swamped by the accelerationist effects of technologies such as AI. Not only is our current political-economy unsustainable\, as the IPCC points out\, but the attempt to fix it through a fusion of AI and increased authoritarianism are only making things worse. \nThe talk will propose the concept of ‘decomputing’ as a socio-technical response to this situation. Decomputing positions computing as first and foremost a matter of care; that is\, as a practice that should pay attention to impact of technology on human and non-human relations. It draws on degrowth and deautomisation as ways to repair our environmental and democratic deficits\, and proposes tools such as the Matrix of Convivial Technology (MCT) as means by which to transform the role of computation in society. While warning of the dangers latent in concepts like abstraction and efficiency\, this talk will highlight the links between low carbon computing and the construction of alternative and more hopeful futures” \nJoin online

SUMMARY:LOCOS Seminar - Ana Valdivia: "Quantifying the environmental impacts of AI supply chains"
DESCRIPTION:Low Carbon Computing Seminar \nAna Valdivia\, Departmental Research Lecturer in Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, Government\, and Policy at the Oxford Internet Institute (OII)\, will deliver their talk “Quantifying the environmental impacts of AI supply chains” \nIn recent decades\, several studies have demonstrated that AI has significant environmental impacts. As the size of algorithms has increased\, AI now consumes more resources than previous machine learning models. More energy\, land\, water\, and raw materials are required to power this technology\, leading to carbon emissions that contribute to global warming\, water withdrawal from rivers and local communities\, and land acidification\, all of which pose serious risks to flora and fauna. However\, the challenge lies in developing standardised methodologies to quantify the environmental impacts of AI. Currently\, there is a lack of publicly available information on AI’s environmental footprint\, but one of the few data sources is the corporate sustainability reports published by companies each year. In this lecture\, we will explore the opportunities and limitations of using this data\, and how machine learning techniques can be applied to analyse it\, shedding light on the relevant aspects of AI’s contribution to environmental issues across its supply chains. \nSee past and future LOCOS Seminars at https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/computing/research/researchthemes/lowcarbon/

SUMMARY:LOCOS Seminar - Thomas Fricke: "Resource Consumption of Data Centers and AI"
DESCRIPTION:Low Carbon Computing Seminar \nThomas Fricke will deliver their talk “Resource Consumption of Data Centers and AI” \nNot only the energy consumption of AI is exploding. Less known is that other resources like water or metal are also affected. The talk gives an overview on the devastating impact of data centers on our environment. Degrowth scenarios seem to be the only way to escape from this ecological nightmare.\nSummarizing the known facts and serious predictions the talk gives an overview on the upcoming possible and impossible scenarios of the energy and resource consumptions. Even if predictions are not easy economical and ecological limits are discussed. Finally\, degrowth will be discussed. Can we degrow data centers without loosing too much of our digital life? How much can be saved using alternative technologies?\nWhat alternatives do we have? Saving some resources might easier than you think! \nSee past and future LOCOS Seminars at https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/computing/research/researchthemes/lowcarbon/

SUMMARY:LOCOS Seminar - Sylvia Wenmackers: "A Philosophical Exploration of Frugal Computing"
DESCRIPTION:Low Carbon Computing Seminar \nSylvia Wenmackers\, BOF Research Professor at the  Centre for Logic and Philosophy of Science (CLPS) of KU Leuven\, will deliver their talk “A Philosophical Exploration of Frugal Computing” \nIn response to the unsustainable rise in materials and energy required for current and projected computations\, Vanderbauhede (2021) argued that we urgently need to adopt a more frugal approach to computing. To develop this proposal\, this talk explores related ideas from economics and philosophy. For instance\, Schumacher’s (1973) Small Is Beautiful gave rise to the notion of ‘appropriate technology’\, which suggests supplementing frugal computing with a people-centered focus. In addition\, environmental virtue ethics can be used to refine a question that frugal computing already poses: in light of human flourishing\, which computations are worth doing in the first place? Finally\, we may wonder whether the study of what needs to be done should ever take precedence over the investigation of the facts themselves. Vermeersch (2001) argued that our current environmental problems do indeed warrant such priorities. \nSee past and future LOCOS Seminars at https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/computing/research/researchthemes/lowcarbon/

SUMMARY:SICSA Education Seminar - Pedagogical Prompt Engineering Protocol Applied to LLM Feedback in Introductory Programming
DESCRIPTION:Please register to attend in person or online. \nVenue: Room 423\, Sir Alwyn Williams Building\, Lilybank Gardens\, School of Computing Science\, University of Glasgow \nJoin us for the last SICSA Education Seminar of 2025 on 15 December at 2pm where University of Glasgow doctoral candidate Eyman Alyahyan will present her work:  A Pedagogical Prompt Engineering Protocol Applied to LLM Feedback in Introductory Programming \nAbstract:\nMany researchers and educators are exploring how Large Language Models (LLMs) could be used to support feedback practices in computing education. Yet the prompts that guide these systems are often ad-hoc and not grounded in pedagogy. What if we could design prompts that enable LLMs to produce feedback that supports student learning? \nIn this seminar\, Eyman Alyahyan introduces the Pedagogical Prompt Engineering Protocol (PPEP)—a systematic\, theory-informed methodology for developing effective educational prompts. PPEP served as the methodological foundation for this work. Applying the protocol led to the PPE-LLM framework\, a set of 10 components that translate the protocol into a clear design structure for building prompts. These components give teachers a ready-to-use scaffold for creating a well-structured prompt. That prompt can then be used to generate formative feedback using LLMs that supports student learning in introductory programming. \nThe talk shows how moving from principles to practice can make LLM-generated feedback more consistent and pedagogically meaningful. It also offers a transparent\, repeatable approach for researchers and developers to create future prompt frameworks and LLM-based feedback tools grounded in pedagogy rather than intuition.

SUMMARY:Co-Production "The Real PPI": Launching The Researcher's Toolkit
DESCRIPTION:Hybrid event hosted at University of Aberdeen \nRegister here: Co-Production Toolkit Launch Event – Expression of Interest \nJoin Dr Michelle Sader (University of Aberdeen) for the launch of The Researcher’s Toolkit\, a valuable resource for researchers across disciplines. \nCo-production is a collaborative approach to research\, where people with both lived and learnt experience work together to conceptualise\, conduct and disseminate research. Co-production not only benefits a variety of different communities\, but is also increasingly sought after by academic funders and journals. As part of a previous workshop co-sponsored by the University\, the Scottish Imaging Network: A Platform For Scientific Excellence (SINAPSE)\, the Eating Disorders and Autism Collaborative and Alzheimer’s Research UK\, workshop attendees and organisers co-designed a 35-page resource toolkit focusing on co-production. This talk will provide an overview of research co-production and will focus on formally launching the toolkit\, an open-source and free resource aiming to guide researchers looking to implement participatory research approaches in their own work. We will also discuss examples with which researchers across disciplines can implement co-production\, as well as signposting our next steps and where the toolkit may be found. \n\n\n\nTime\nEvent\n\n\n11:00-11:05\nWelcome and Housekeeping\n\n\n11:05-11:30\nPresenting the Toolkit\n\n\n11:30-11:45\nWorked Example: Using the Toolkit in Practice\n\n\n11:45-12:00\nQuestions & Discussion\n\n\n12:00\nNext Steps & Closing

SUMMARY:LOCOS Seminar - Lieven Eeckhout: Sustainable Processor Design
DESCRIPTION:Low Carbon Computing Seminar \nLieven Eeckhout is a Professor at Ghent University\, Belgium\, and will deliver a LOCOS Seminar on Sustainable Processor Design. \nSustainability and climate change is a major challenge for our generation. In this talk I will argue that sustainable development requires a holistic approach and involves multi-perspective thinking. Applied to computing\, sustainable development means that we need to consider the entire environmental impact of computing\, including raw material extraction\, component manufacturing\, product assembly\, transportation\, use\, repair/maintenance\, and end-of-life processing (disassembly and recycling/ reuse). Analyzing current trends reveals that the embodied footprint is\, or will soon be\, more significant compared to the operational footprint. I will present a simple\, yet insightful\, first-order model to assess and reason about the sustainability of processors in light of the inherent data uncertainty. Applying the model to a variety of case studies illustrates what computer architects and engineers can and should do to better understand the sustainability impact of computing\, and to design sustainable processors. \nSee past and future LOCOS Seminars at https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/computing/research/researchthemes/lowcarbon/

SUMMARY:LOCOS Seminar - Educating for Low-Carbon Computing: Designing a Cross-Layer Sustainable Computing Course in an HPC Curriculum with PedrocTrancoso
DESCRIPTION:Low Carbon Computing Seminar \nPedro Petersen Moura Trancoso of Chalmers University of Technology will deliver a LOCOS seminar: Designing a Cross-Layer Sustainable Computing Course in an HPC Curriculum. \nThe rapid growth of computational demand\, combined with the carbon cost of device production and the end of Moore’s Law scaling\, makes low-carbon computing a first-order engineering challenge. Achieving “frugal computing” — doing more with less energy — requires reasoning across the full system stack. \nThis talk presents the design and evolution of a master-level Sustainable Computing course within the High-Performance Computer Systems programme at Chalmers University of Technology. The course integrates circuit-level power mechanisms\, architectural techniques\, operating system and runtime strategies\, and data centre efficiency\, supported by hands-on energy measurement and simulation. \nProfessor Trancoso will discuss both the pedagogical rationale and the challenges encountered: polarized student perceptions of depth\, aligning assessment with cross-layer learning\, and balancing breadth with technical rigor. The talk aims to contribute to ongoing discussions on how computing curricula can prepare engineers to treat energy and carbon as first-class system constraints. \nSee past and future LOCOS Seminars at https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/computing/research/researchthemes/lowcarbon/

SUMMARY:HRI 2026
DESCRIPTION:The ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) is the premier venue for innovations on human-robot interaction. Sponsored by the ACM special interest groups on computer-human interaction (SIGCHI) and artificial intelligence (SIGAI) as well as the IEEE robotics and automation society (RAS)\, HRI brings together researchers spanning robotics\, human-computer interaction\, human factors\, artificial intelligence\, engineering\, and social and behavioral sciences. \nThe theme of the 21st edition of HRI is HRI Empowering Society. \nOur field has the potential to bring about positive change in many areas of our societies such as healthcare\, transport\, remote working\, agriculture and industry. However\, this change cannot happen if we do not engage properly with the end users who will potentially utilize robots in their jobs and daily lives. \nFor this reason\, HRI 2026 will focus on: 1) how we can ethically integrate robots in everyday processes without creating disruptions or inequalities\, carefully thinking at the future of work and services; 2) how we can make them accessible to the general public (in terms of design\, technical literacy and cost) with the final aim to make robots more willingly adopted as technological helpers. \nMore information is available on the HRI 2026 website

SUMMARY:SICSA Seminar - Can Evolution Develop Public Transport Networks?
DESCRIPTION:Register to attend \nJoin us on Wednesday\, 25 March for an AI & Data Science Seminar. \nDr Neil Urquhart of Edinburgh Napier University presents \nCan Evolution Develop Public Transport Networks? \nPublic transport networks by their very nature evolve over time to meet the needs of travellers\, fit the constraints of operators and meet the aspirations of politicians. This talk examines the use of novelty search to explore changes to the bus network in the centre of Edinburgh. The existing solution has been evolving since 1871 matching the changing nature of the city and transportation technologies. We harness geospatial data to evaluate the existing solution and then use novelty search to find modified solutions and examine their relationship to the existing solution. We are particularly interested in balancing the novelty of proposed changes with the distance from the current trusted solution. \nThis talk will demonstrate the potential for novelty search to assist with the design and modification of public transport routes and set and agenda for future research which will aim to cover larger areas and encompass multiple transport modes. \nDr Neil Urquhart is Associate Professor of Computer Science at Edinburgh Napier University\, his research interests include real-world applications of Artificial Intelligence particularly in the transport sector. \n
