SUMMARY:SICSA Seminar - Dr Abd Alsattar Ardati presents Teaching Product Judgement
DESCRIPTION:Teaching Product Judgement: Rethinking the Student Experience in Software Product and Project Management with Dr Abd Alsattar Ardati\nAbstract:\nSoftware engineering students are often well prepared to think about implementation and delivery\, but less often asked to reason about value\, prioritisation\, uncertainty\, and strategic trade-offs. In this talk\, I will present the pedagogical design of CS5034\, a Master’s-level module in Software Product and Project Management at the University of St Andrews\, and reflect on how it was used to reshape the student experience around product judgement rather than delivery alone. The module combines a standards-based foundation in software product management through ISPMA with discovery-led teaching\, a shared fictional startup case\, studio-style tutorials\, and coursework built around revision and feedback. I will discuss how this design makes assumptions\, trade-offs\, and strategic reasoning more visible to students\, and what this experience suggests for educators seeking stronger connections between software engineering education and contemporary product practice.\nDr Abd Alsattar Ardati is a Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of St Andrews where his work spans human computer interaction\, software engineering\, and digital inclusion\, with a focus on participatory design and socio-technical systems that connect universities\, industry\, and communities.\nThis seminar will be hybrid from University of St Andrews. Register to receive meeting link.

SUMMARY:SICSA Seminar - Dr Carl Strathearn presents AI-driven Humanoid Robots for Education
DESCRIPTION:AI-driven Humanoid Robots for Education: Insights from UK Rapid Technology Assessments with Dr Carl Strathearn\nAbstract:\nAI-driven humanoid robots are gradually moving out of laboratories and into factories around the world. However\, more challenging domains such as education\, domestic environments\, and healthcare are significantly more unpredictable and difficult to evaluate in terms of effectiveness\, social interaction\, and risk.\nLast year\, Dr Strathearn contributed to the development of two rapid technology assessments published by the UK Government Office for Science on humanoid and AI-driven robots. These reports examined the feasibility and challenges of deploying such systems in their current state to help inform policymakers across government. In this talk\, he will provide a deep dive into the current state of the art in humanoid robotics\, covering large language models (LLMs)\, vision-language models (VLMs)\, and emerging vision-language-action (VLA) models\, and discuss some of the key challenges involved in deploying this technology in education going forward.\nDr Carl Strathearn is a lecturer in computer science and researcher in AI and humanoid robots at Edinburgh Napier University.\nThis seminar will be hybrid from Edinburgh Napier University’s Merchiston Campus. Register to receive meeting link.

SUMMARY:SICSA Education Seminar: Investigating the challenges of dyslexia and the future aids that can support students
DESCRIPTION:For our September Education Seminar\, we are thrilled that PhD student\, Catriona Weir from University of Strathclyde will be presenting her research. \nAbstract:\nDyslexia is a neurological learning disability that impacts people’s reading\, writing and spelling abilities. It is thought that ten per cent of the UK population may have dyslexia. Previous research studies have found that those with dyslexia tend to have good creative and problem-solving skills. Therefore\, it is understandable that computing science appeals to those with dyslexia as it utilises both these skills. However\, students with dyslexia can face additional challenges when learning to program\, and this may have an impact on their motivation and future success. \nThis talk investigates the additional challenges that those with dyslexia face and the future aids that can support them in completing their computing studies. \nRegister for in-person or online tickets

SUMMARY:UKICER 2025 - Keynote: Teaching Responsible AI Literacy in Schools: Perspectives from academics and teachers (part of the main conference programme)
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Judy Robertson\, Serdar Abaci\, the Data Education in Schools Team and the AI Teachers in Residence \nGenerative AI has the potential to disrupt education\, whether used by learners or their teachers. The impact of GenAI tools on learning outcomes at school level is not yet known\, although there is some promise from initial empirical work. However\, given the impacts of Generative AI on society\, there is a need to educate children and young people about AI\, even while the educational impact of using AI is explored. \nThis talk will be jointly presented by a team of researchers and teachers who collaborated to develop lessons to support secondary school teachers in teaching their classes about AI. We will describe the principles behind the AI curriculum across four strands of work: the relationship of AI to Children’s Rights and ethics\, AI literacy\, critical thinking\, and the responsible use of AI to support learning. We will explain our AI Teachers in Residence model and why we thought it was important to co-develop it with teachers across a range of secondary subjects\, rather than focusing solely on computer science teachers. Some of our AI Teachers in Residence will present the materials they created and share how they have been used in classrooms so far. There will be opportunities for the audience to discuss with the teachers how best to teach AI in schools.

SUMMARY:UKICER 2025 - Pre-conference Event 1: GenAI Integration in Computer Science Education
DESCRIPTION:This event will be presented by Pavlos Andreadis \nThe rise of Generative AI (GenAI) sets both a challenge and an opportunity for Computer Science (CS) education. This interactive event builds on key insights from a recent study* exploring how GenAI is being integrated into CS teaching\, assessment\, and learning at the University of Edinburgh. We’ll share emerging patterns\, pitfalls\, and points of tension identified through staff and student engagement\, and use these as a springboard for collective reflection – surfacing shared concerns and identifying concrete next steps\, at the level of course design\, institutional policy\, or collaborative experimentation. \nParticipants will engage in a practical\, hands-on exercise using GenAI tools within a controlled CS education context – designed to be directly useful\, while also shedding light on effective and ineffective practices. This session is aimed at course organisers\, instructors\, and teaching-focused researchers seeking to make informed\, context-sensitive decisions about GenAI in their teaching.\nCome prepared to think critically\, test practically\, and contribute meaningfully to a rapidly evolving conversation that will shape the future of CS education. \nJoin us to learn\, experiment\, and help define how GenAI should serve – not distort – the goals of CS education. \n* Principals’ Teaching Award Scheme-funded; GenAI Integration in Computer Science Education. \nRegister for the event as a free add-on through the UKICER 2025 website.

SUMMARY:Building student community in computing: how partnership with students can support engagement
DESCRIPTION:We are looking forward to the June Seminar in our Education Seminar Series! This will take place at University of Edinburgh on Tuesday 3rd June. \nDr Fiona McNeill\, Reader in Computing Education and Director of Students in Informatics at the University of Edinburgh\, will hold a panel discussion with undergraduate students in Informatics. \nBuilding community and sense of belonging in computing departments is notoriously challenging – with early-year classes that are often very large\, students who often complete much of the work online\, and significant differences in prior experience with the subject. Recognising these challenges\, CompSoc – the main student society in Informatics – created a plan to introduce an Academic Family scheme into the school\, where incoming students are put in families of 8-10\, with 2-3 returning students acting as parents. The school partnered with CompSoc in the roll out\, providing logistical support\, guidance and resources. \nIn this talk\, key students involved in the roll out\, together with the Director of Students for the school\, discuss our experiences in the first year and the lessons we have learned. We will discuss the research we have done with students in three categories: academic children\, academic parents\, and students who chose not to participate in the scheme\, and present the key findings of this research\, in terms of the value students see in such a scheme\, the barriers to engagement and the ways in which they want us to take the scheme forward. \nRegister for in person or online tickets

SUMMARY:April Education Seminar
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted that Dr Ella Taylor-Smith will be speaking at our April Education Seminar. \nAs information infrastructures increasingly shape decisions that affect us\, especially through the undertow of artificial intelligence\, it is essential that women and gender minorities are well-represented across computing and engineering. However\, the gender imbalance in technology education seems to be self-perpetuating\, leading to a deficit of women lecturers and students\, and providing a gender imbalanced education environment\, which further discourages women from technology degrees and careers. Through online surveys and focus groups of computing and engineering students of all genders\, we explore the tension between students’ vision of “not just for men” subjects and careers\, including their suggestions for re-categorisation\, and their day-to-day experience of male-dominated courses. While keen to proselytise their career paths in ways they perceived to be attractive to women – such as being friendly and of benefit to society – many of our students experienced isolation\, doubt\, and sexist assumptions. \nBoth in-person and online tickets are available. \nRegister for the event

SUMMARY:Digital Inclusion in Later Life: Exploring the Digital Literacy Needs of Older Adults
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted that Dr Dharini Balasubramanium will be speaking at our March Education Seminar. \nDigital inclusion in later life is a global challenge. As public services and resources become increasingly digitalised\, many older adults struggle to adapt to this digital-by-default world. Population ageing\, fast-changing technologies and a lack of systematic and age-appropriate support exacerbate this problem. This talk will discuss ongoing research in the School of Computer Science at the University of St Andrews in understanding the barriers and enablers to digital technology adoption by older adults. We will explore the nature of the digital divide\, the initiatives by governments and NGOs to tackle the challenge\, open issues\, insights from the research already conducted\, and avenues for future work\, with a particular focus on improving the digital literacy and confidence of older adults. We will also briefly consider the implications of the findings for Universities\, particularly in supporting adult returners and lifelong learners. \nDharini is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of St Andrews. Her research interests are broadly in the area of software engineering\, including software architecture\, uncertainty in software systems\, software ethics\, digital inclusion in later life\, and computer science education. Dharini is currently the Director of Admissions\, Recruitment and Outreach for the School of Computer Science. \nTickets are free to any Computer Science staff member or student at a Scottish Institution. \nRegister for the Digital Inclusion in Later Life event

SUMMARY:SICSA Education Event: "Evaluating the Sense of Belonging of Undergraduate Computing Students in the UK and Ireland - an invitation to collaborate".
DESCRIPTION:SICSA Education is delighted to be supporting the launch of the University of Edinburgh Computer Science Education (CSE) group. There will also be a keynote talk on “Evaluating the Sense of Belonging of Undergraduate Computing Students in the UK and Ireland – an invitation to collaborate”.  \nBoth the keynote and the event as a whole is open to anyone in Scotland and beyond with an interest in the intersection of education and computer science. \nFor more information and registration details\, please see https://www.tickettailor.com/events/computerscienceeducation/1012242.  If you choose to attend remotely a link to be sent upon registration \nKeynote Session Abstract:\nDuring this presentation\, we will introduce our plans for our forthcoming collaborative project – which we are running as a RIPPA (Research in Practice Project Activity)\, a year-long multi-institute research project\, part of the UKICER (UK and Ireland Computing Education Research) programme. As well as sharing our plans with the community\, we are looking to engage those interested in collaborating as part of this project from institutions across the country. \nSense of Belonging\, or belongingness\, is an individual’s personal conviction regarding their acceptance as a valued member within an academic community. The significance of student belongingness lies in its correlation with various outcomes including motivation\, persistence\, mental health and well-being. However\, the experience of belongingness is subject to variations influenced by factors such as race/ethnicity and gender. Previous research has demonstrated notable statistical differences in the belongingness experienced by computing students who identify as women or as part of other minoritized groups. \nDuring the COVID-19 pandemic\, we observed a decline in belongingness among male and female students who do not identify as minoritised\, while an increase was observed among women who identify as minoritised. Although students have returned to campus\, current surveys reveal that the belongingness levels among men and women who do not identify as minoritised have not fully recovered to pre-pandemic levels. Additionally\, a statistically significant decrease in belongingness is observed among men who identify as minoritised. This emphasizes the necessity for continued efforts to restore student belongingness to its pre-pandemic state and shed light on the positive impact that moving to a virtual environment appeared to have on sense of belonging of minoritised women. \nWe have been studying the sense of belonging of undergraduate students in the School of Computer Science at University College Dublin since 2017\, and at the University of Edinburgh since 2021. We have recently extended this work across Ireland and Northern Ireland\, and would now like to expand further across Scotland and into Wales and England. We invite interested parties to participate in our RIPPA (Research in Practice Project Activity)\, a year long project starting in Autumn 2023.
